Worry not! Expert advice on Jewelry for your hands’ type

Your type of hands will determine which kind of rings will suit you better, since they are the only accessories available for them. I have come across people who do not like to wear rings at all, sometimes because of a health condition (arthritis) and sometimes because they have big fingers and think rings will not look good on them. The question about these two cases is that both have a solution. There are special rings made for people with problems like arthritis, and custom-made or sizable rings for people with all kinds of finger sizes.

Whenever you’re in a jewelry store, if you see a model you like, chances are you can get it to your specific size, and, depending on the store, they might be able to custom-make one ring specific to your finger size and shape. That means, that in some cases they will be able to adjust the size and width from scratch (much better than stretching or cutting, more on this in another post).

The length and shape of the fingers determine the kind of rings that will look best on you. I have had customers come wearing rings that make their hands look bigger than they already are and rings that get completely lost in slender, long fingers. To avoid giving the impression that you’re only wearing that ring because you inherited it or your special someone gave it to you (free is always welcome, in most cases), choose the rings that will complement your fingers and truly wow people. Trust me, jewelry people are the harshest critics when it does not fit right, but your greatest admirers when it does, we love to meet people who know their jewelry!

Here are some tips for your type of hands:

Long and thick fingers

Your fingers are thicker than average, but they are also long, that is great! You´re balanced and that means you can wear thicker rings that girls with shorter fingers cannot, but do not overdo it. Big fingers need bigger rings, longer fingers need thicker rings; find a balance between these two and preferably take a friend’s opinion (shopping with friends can be a great experience if they’re in that helpful mood) or a jewelry person’s opinion when it comes to looks. You, from all the other types, can wear the biggest and thickest rings there are, but again, do not overdo it!

Long and slim fingers

The piano player fingers, as I like to call them. Most people envy your hands because they are perfect, but there is a perfect look to everyone. Long and slim means you cannot wear thin bands, because they´ll make your fingers look even longer and the piece tends to look too small on you. You can wear thicker-than-average rings and bands. If you are into thinner rings, one of the best things you can do is stack rings or wear sets (lucky you!). Average width rings are fine but try to fall on the thicker side.

Short and thick fingers

Beauty has always been about symmetry; symmetric patterns form part of all things in nature, and your fingers are the same. The formula is simple, body parts and jewelry pieces must contrast, never match, so to contrast short fingers, we need thin bands and rings, this will bring a balance to your fingers and give them a longer look. However, since your fingers are also thick, average-width rings will give your hands that thin look. Your options range from average rings (always ask for an opinion) to thin bands, do not look for the thinnest ones because they will get lost, always find a balance.

Short and slim fingers

The average ring might look too big on you, so you must look for a thinner ring that will give you a longer look. Your hands are considered petite and thus you must look for pieces that are smaller than average (good news for average stone sizes, they look huge on your fingers!). Sets (such as a wedding set) must be thin and it’s not recommended to go for stackable rings unless they are very thin.
