It is true what they say about one’s body, we are never satisfied. The problem is not the shape, but our lack of knowledge when it comes to matching and contrasting. Another more comfortable truth: anyone can look amazing with the right type of jewelry. If you knew what I’ve learned from helping thousands pick their jewelry, you would be getting rid of half your collection (please don’t).
When it comes to jewelry sets, we tend to try to match pieces in shape, colors, size, and setting. However, when it comes to a body part and a jewelry piece, we want to contrast, not match. Matching pieces draw attention to that which it matches, in this case, the body part. By contrasting we are creating a look that either draws attention away or highlights the desired body part.
After years professional experience, I can tell you what works and what does not. Here are my recommendations:
Oval shape– Considered the most versatile, you can get away with wearing almost any kind of shape in earrings and necklaces. If you are starting your collection, stick to the basics first. The whole idea is to create symmetry and your face shape is easy to complement. Wear round, rectangular, triangular, any shape looks good on you if it is not too long! Remember that the longer the piece the longer your face will look, so stick with a short to medium length (Princess, 18” – Matinee, 20”).
Diamond shape – Very similar to the oval shape, in earrings you can wear medium to short length pieces, from dangling earrings to studs. A sharp angle at the jaw line means we are leaning towards shorter, rounder necklaces that soften the angle (Princess, 18” – Matinee, 20”); longer necklaces will make your face look longer than it is.
Heart shape – A mix of round and sharp angles; stick to round shapes for earrings (regular studs will do) and short necklaces and pendants. If you are a fan of the choker (16” length), it´s time to get a nice omega necklace that complements your face, from short to medium width. As a matter of fact, omega necklaces are timeless pieces, especially when you have big pendants to show!
Round shape – The idea behind jewelry for round shapes is to contrast the shape of your face with the shape of the pieces. Aim for longer pieces such as oval hoops (never round) or dangling earrings. In necklaces you want to aim for pieces with triangular (pointing down) or rectangular shapes; irregular shapes are fine if they are thin and drop low. This will create an illusion of length and draw attention away from your face shape.
Square shape – A square shaped face is like a round face in terms of what to wear. Since a square shape has sharp angles (very symmetrical), we want to do our best to reflect curved and oval angles to achieve contrast. One way to do this is to wear oval hoops (the bigger the better) or long dangling earrings. As for necklaces, you should aim for long chains and pendants that draw attention away from the face (downward triangles work amazing).
Triangle shape – Ample jaw means we are going to need curves to contrast the sharp angles. That means necklaces no longer than 20” (Matinee length), such as a beautiful pearl necklace (if you’re into pearls) that will soften those sharp angles. In terms of earrings, think of your face as a triangle, and remember what I mentioned about contrast between body parts and jewelry pieces. No matching allowed, so nothing that looks like a triangle or rhombus (two triangles). Look for round hoops, studs, and dangling earrings with a straight pattern, such as rectangles, those will contrast your shape perfectly.
